Comments by Bill Burch on the paper

“Black Holes and Butterflies: Problems of Information Flow and Community Dis-Integration of West Rock Ridge Park.”

By Jon Kohl, William Martin, Erin Holmes McKenna, Chris Page

Evaluation by Professor William R. Burch Jr. for the course Ecosystem Management.

Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies

May 1996

“May not be perfect in some absolute sense — but about as close as we get in this line of work.

Analysis: Brilliant. You combine a wide array of data and sources — restructure theory — and make significant progress in linking biophysical/socio-cultural variables.

Critical insight: You take risks — push the envelope of possibility and connect in the ecosystem management manner.

Logic and use of source materials: Extensive review of sources — an uncompromising rigor — your treatment of use and variety in communities — plant and human — is just what we need.

Procedures: Graphics are excellent and truly advance the argument — a superior effort.

Style: A bouncy — almost excited style — draws the reader in and keeps them moving through the text — a difficult job.

This will be a valuable source for many years to come.”
