Proofreading
Proofreading is the simplest level of editing that searches only for mistakes of grammar, clear word choice problems, spelling, and inconsistent style.

Copy editing
Copy editing includes proofreading but also re-writes sentence to eliminate awkward structures, clarity problems, and other aspects of writing that inhibit readability. May include re-formatting paragraphs.

Critiquing
Critiquing does not include proofreading or copy-editing. It is an earlier step that analyzes either outlines or early drafts for overall structure, form, and strategy. Once these elements are determined, then the author should copy-edit and finally proofread.
