Proofreading |
Proofreading is the simplest level of editing that searches only for mistakes of grammar, clear word choice problems, spelling, and inconsistent style. |

| Copy editing |
Copy editing includes proofreading but also re-writes sentence to eliminate awkward structures, clarity problems, and other aspects of writing that inhibit readability. May include re-formatting paragraphs. |

| Critiquing |
Critiquing does not include proofreading or copy-editing. It is an earlier step that analyzes either outlines or early drafts for overall structure, form, and strategy. Once these elements are determined, then the author should copy-edit and finally proofread. |
