The official presentation of the teaching materials
"Manejo, disposición y aprovechamiento de los desechos
sólidos" y "El Monstruo de
LEJOS" took place on 21 February 1997. Over 75
participants were in attendance at the Simon Bolivar National Zoo
and Botanical Garden in the middle of San José, Costa Rica
including the press, representatives from the Fundación
Pro-Zoológicos, Conservation International, McDonald's
Corporation, and Peace Corps, as well as the Minister of
Environment and Energy and the Minister of Education. The project
is linked to the solid waste program of the latter ministry. (Big
thank you to the fabulous Didi Hyde for having designed and
painted along Adrian, her assistant, the "Monstruo de
LEJOS" and the visual creation of Ojoloco!)
The 158-page book and fantasy story are divided
into four main sections: background to the trash, the ingredients
of the trash, the remedies to the solid waste problem, and the
lessons learned. Each of the 17 chapters draws on its
corresponding thematic vignette in the story. The campaign is
designed for grades 1-6 which compose the largest segment of the
Zoo's visiting audience. The activities are meant not only to
effect learning but also improve the environment as well.
