Birthday Spoon Carving

Happy Birthday, Dad!

The original wood for this spoon came from Peter’s woodpile in November 06, southern New Hampshire. This is the largest spoon I’ve done to date and it took the longest. I had to bring it back to Costa Rica to finish working it and thus makes it the first spoon I worked on in the tropics, although it is some kind of oak, I think.

This spatula, my second implement made from Black Cherry firewood from the Allegheny National Forest, I gave to Megan Hill for her birthday in December 2005. I used only a hand axe, carving knife, and sandpaper. Notice the two insect bites in the middle of the handle. The slight notch on the left side is due to a knot intentionally maintained in this piece.

Carving is easy, just go down to the skin and stop.
