Harley-Davidson Powertrain Factory

Harley-Davidson last year celebrated its anniversary with a 50,000-bike event and parade in Milwaukee. As much as we would have liked to have seen a tour of a bike factory (which is outside of Milwaukee) or the museum (which opens in 2006), we settled for the engine — or powertrain, as they call it — plant. The tour was pretty technical and very matter of fact and we couldn't take pictures, but the real excitement happened when we left the building.

We got outside and noticed that the employees, who get discounts on the bikes if they work for at least a year and agree to hold on to the bike for at least a year, park their bikes right in front of the building. This sign lets visitors know what's what.

Just as we finished our tour, the day shift had ended (there are three shifts a day, one of which is maintenance). So the employees came out.

Harley-Davidson Power

We got to see them start up and drive off in their powerful bikes. You know there are only two kinds of bikers: those who ride Harleys and those who wish they did.
