Statue of Liberty

When France enjoyed the zeal of liberty it wanted to give a symbolic gift to some country. When Egypt did not work out, promoters of the statue thought the USA in its burgeoning independence was the best possible of options. France promised to pay for everything except for a glorious pedestal upon which Lady Liberty was to stand. Congress didn't want to pay for it. Rich New Yorkers did not want to pay for it. So for years, Lady Liberty lied in pieces in a warehouse. During that time her arm was placed in a prominent yard in downtown Manhattan as a fundraising tool. Eventually a massive grassroots fundraising campaign amongst mostly lower class folks yielded enough money to build the pedestal.

Approaching

Newcomers snap a whole roll of film before they realize just how close they can actually get to the statue. Note the helicopter flying over the statue.

She Stands Tall

Contrary to popular Hollywood lore, Lady Liberty does not stand under 100 feet of ice and snow. Given current terrorist fears, security would never let the ice get that close.
