Ellis
Island
While
Lady Liberty enjoyed the fanfare of welcoming, the power behind the
statue, the place where the real work of welcoming took place was
Ellis Island. On this mostly man-made island, officials interviewed
over 12 million people. Only two percent of immigrants were deported
for health reasons, criminal, or other motives.

they waited their turn. The National Park Service restored

Barrel
Jumper
While
waiting in line to board the ferry to the islands, this
muscular daredevil performed stunts. At quick glance, the
jumper seems to be standing still, but he actually is springboarding
after a sprint of 10 yards. The energy from his run is rippling
through his body. Click on the large image and notice that
his left shoe is still perfectly in focus.
