An
unconventional engagement
Honeymoons
are supposed to be in countries like Costa Rica, but engagements?
Jon Kohl, son of Adele Kohl of 45 Baker St. and Peter Kohl
of Wyndham, N.H., continues his international theme by strategically
choosing a sun down over the Pacific Ocean.
Up
on a hillside in a private nature reserve, he had his accomplice
prepped, the champagne hidden away, and a princess jade
ring from Antigua eager to locate a new fiancee's finger
of honor.
On
Jan. 4, 2003, with the setting sun to his back, Jon recited
a bilingual Spanish-English poem for Marisol Mayorga, Costa
Rican, then live-in girlfriend since August 2000 when she
moved in with Jon in Honduras. Six months later they moved
to Guatemala City. Last august, they moved to Stevens Point,
Wis., where Marisol is pursuing her master's degree in environmental
education and Jon continues to work with RARE Center for
Tropical Conservation, based in Arlington, Va.
As
deep surprise overtook Marisol, Jon's brother, Brian Kohl,
was there to render the moment indelibly into the matrix
of the Internet. For a blow-by-blow four-color illustration
and bilingual narrative of the engagment, as well as a closeup
of the ring, the Kohl brothers invite friends and family
